What is it?

How the NHS 3-week rotation works

The NHS 3-week rotation is a 21-day shift cycle common across NHS hospitals, care homes, and community health settings. A typical version rotates through three weeks: a week of Earlies (typically 07:00–15:00), a week of Lates (13:00–21:00), and a week of Nights (21:00–07:30). The cycle then repeats.

The exact times and days-off pattern vary by trust and ward, but the 3-week rotating structure is consistent enough that ShiftFlowr can pre-fill it from a single anchor date.

ShiftFlowr is the only general rota app with an NHS 3-week rotation preset. Most shift apps only cover patterns used in North American industries. ShiftFlowr was built for UK shift workers, so NHS terminology and patterns are built in from day one.

Common questions

NHS 3-week rotation FAQ

My rota doesn't follow a strict 3-week cycle. Can I still use ShiftFlowr?
Yes. If your trust uses a different cycle length or irregular shift mix, you can use ShiftFlowr's custom pattern builder to define the exact sequence of shifts and days off that matches your actual rota.
Can ShiftFlowr calculate my NHS pay, including night enhancements?
Yes. ShiftFlowr's salary calculator lets you enter your basic hourly rate and set enhancement multipliers for nights and weekends. It gives you an estimated monthly and annual take-home, including UK income tax and National Insurance.
I rotate between wards and my rota changes each block. What do I do?
Apply the preset for each standard block. For months where your rota changes, add or edit shifts individually — the preset won't overwrite anything you've already entered.
Does ShiftFlowr work with Healthroster or Allocate?
Not directly. ShiftFlowr is a personal calendar app — you enter your shifts yourself or apply a preset. It doesn't connect to your trust's rostering system, but it takes under a minute to set up your rotation once you know your anchor date.
