Early shift explained
The early shift — also called the morning shift, first shift, or AM shift — is the first of the day, typically starting between 6 am and 7 am. It's the shift your alarm hates most.

What is it?
An early shift is the first working period of the day — opening up a business, factory, hospital ward, or operation before the rest of the world is fully awake. It typically starts between 6:00 am and 8:00 am, depending on the industry and contract.
On a standard 8-hour three-shift system, the early covers the morning and early afternoon, handing over to the late (afternoon/swing) shift mid-day. On 12-hour rotating patterns, the early runs from morning through to evening.
Typical hours by shift length
| Shift length | Typical start | Typical end | Notes |

| 8 hours | 6:00 am | 2:00 pm | Common in healthcare (UK), manufacturing |
| 8 hours | 7:00 am | 3:00 pm | Very common across all industries |
| 8 hours | 8:00 am | 4:00 pm | Office hours variant, retail, logistics |
| 10 hours | 6:00 am | 4:00 pm | Emergency services and some factory rotas |
| 12 hours | 7:00 am | 7:00 pm | NHS, security, FIFO — long day shift |

Who works early shifts?
NHS nurses, HCAs, and care home staff work Earlies to cover morning rounds, medications, and the handover from the night team. One of the most common shifts in nursing rotas.
Production lines start early. Warehouse, factory, and logistics workers open the day shift to keep operations running through the morning and into the afternoon.
Police, fire, and ambulance services typically start the first crew at 6 am or 7 am on 8- or 12-hour rotating patterns.
Security officers on rotating patterns cover the early shift as part of a 4-on-4-off or Panama cycle, often paired with nights and lates.
